Our Mission

Healthcare should work for patients, but it doesn’t. In their time of need, they call down outdated insurance directories. Then wait on hold. Then wait weeks for the privilege of a visit. Then wait in a room solely designed for waiting. Then wait for a surprise bill. In any other consumer industry, the companies delivering such a poor customer experience would not survive. But in healthcare, patients lack market power. Which means they are expected to accept the unacceptable.

Zocdoc’s mission is to give power to the patient. To do that, we’ve built the leading healthcare marketplace that makes it easy to find and book in-person or virtual care in all 50 states, across +200 specialties and +12k insurance plans. By giving patients the ability to see and choose, we give them power. In doing so, we can make healthcare work like every other consumer sector, where businesses compete for customers, not the other way around. In time, this will drive quality up and prices down.

We’re 17 years old and the leader in our space, but we are still just getting started. If you like solving important, complex problems alongside deeply thoughtful, driven, and collaborative teammates, read on.

Your Impact on our Mission

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, you will be stepping into a role that parallels the impact and expertise expected of a Staff Engineer, acting as the primary technical authority and architect for the teams at the edge between Zocdoc and other healthcare companies. You will set the standards and best practices for API design and developer experiences throughout the full portfolio of Zocdoc’s products and platforms. Working directly with our API, Interoperability, Availability, and Insurance teams, you will ship capabilities, via the Zocdoc API, that bring the capabilities of Zocdoc to third-party developers who can build custom experiences leveraging our provider search, availability, and booking expertise. As the architect of the team that is the external face of Zocdoc’s technical capabilities, you will showcase and cultivate our engineering brand and help influence the trajectory of healthcare technology in the US.

You’ll enjoy this role if you are…

  • Excited to build a highly-adopted API with an emphasis on developer experience
  • Passionate about systems design, developer products, and scalable, technical solutions that solve real-world problems
  • Mission-driven, with an ambition to tackle difficult problems in a complex, highly-regulated industry with a first-of-its-kind product
  • Strategically business-minded, with a strong sense of how to balance short-term deliverables with long-term business goals
  • Willing and eager to work with Product and other business owners on project ideas
  • Excited to represent Zocdoc by directly interacting with external developers and technical leaders
  • A believer that diverse and inclusive teams and cultures are non-negotiable

Your day to day is…

  • Staying current with projects across the Product Platform teams and the rest of Zocdoc’s technology organization, using good judgment and business acumen to decide the best level of involvement to drive progress
  • Building and iterating on a technical strategy, and determining how best to align products and projects to that vision
  • Learning from internal and external engineers to find opportunities to optimize Zocdoc’s API and developer experience
  • Making architectural decisions to ensure the stability, scalability, and simplicity of our systems and unblocking teams to execute on those decisions
  • Mentoring and coaching a team of engineers to maintain a high-quality API, while delivering new features with high velocity
  • Making sure we are building out the platform’s capabilities with attention to security, scale, performance, and uptime

You’ll be successful in this role if you have…

  • 10+ years of experience as a software engineer, including 3+ years as Staff Engineer and/or Architect
  • Extensive experience building and consuming APIs, ideally with a healthcare focus. Bonus points if you’ve shipped API-first products
  • An eagerness to learn and solve real problems in healthcare
  • A willingness to code alongside other engineers, readiness to mentor and coach, and the judgment to know how to contribute most effectively
  • Deep knowledge of API patterns, standards, and best practices
  • A strong understanding of identity and access management fundamentals
  • Experience building critical systems, with high uptime and security expectations
  • Experience balancing greenfield development against iterative improvements to legacy systems
  • Familiarity with architecting for scale, including an understanding of service-oriented and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure, container orchestration, and serverless technologies
  • Solid communication skills with the ability to influence key stakeholders and make meaningful contributions to external-facing documentation
  • The mentality of an entrepreneur/owner and a strong bias to action
  • Humility. You believe in treating all people with dignity and respect, regardless of title or tenure, and you approach tough conversations with empathy
