About the Role:

Gusto is seeking a Payroll Compliance professional to play an integral part in all things payroll. As Gusto scales and expands, this team is frequently called upon to help research requirements, communicate upcoming changes to internal and external customers, assist with internal testing, resolve issues, review processes, and conduct training. We are looking for a new team member that is eager to  learn about new payroll compliance rules, enjoys reading and deciphering complex legislation and regulations, translating compliance rules into simple systems and processes, and can coordinate between internal teams.

You'll have the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and play a vital role in the development and growth of the payroll infrastructure as Gusto continues to scale.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Research new payroll compliance rules, and track upcoming changes and legislation
  • Document requirements and communicate to internal teams promptly
  • Lead & participate in project/product management meetings in order to guide product development from a regulatory perspective
  • Establish metrics, prioritize new features and system enhancements using risk assessments, cost/benefit analysis, and monitor and report on our progress on metrics and goals.
  • Identify ways to improve our systems, processes, documentation, training and communications; anticipate and quickly resolve open questions
  • Reach out to federal, state and/or municipal agencies, other industry members and vendors, as appropriate to resolve or escalate issues
  • Support our customer care advocates and engineering teams with impeccable compliance research

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 7-10 years overall professional experience in US payroll and/or payroll tax
  • 5+ years of technical experience (QA, Compliance, Data Analytics) with payroll systems and/or payroll rules and regulations
  • Ability to research and translate compliance changes into process-driven documentation for operational and engineering teams
  • Experience collaborating with engineering teams in the software development lifecycle; previous user acceptance testing experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience offering guidance and opinions to internal teams and/or customers regarding the best course of action using data and your payroll expertise
  • Ability to handle internal and external escalations (i.e. addressing delays, questions, and other concerns with agencies)
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to provide status updates to engineering and customer-facing partners

Our cash compensation amount for this role is between $112,000 - $132,00/year in Denver and between $136,000 - $160,000/year for New York/San Francisco. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
