Job Description
NBC Sports is seeking a Director of Remote Engineering to join our Remote Technical Operations and Engineering (RTOE) Department. The Director will facilitate remote productions and support technical initiatives in our remote broadcast environment. They will lead a team of remote engineers to coordinate, facilitate, and operationally execute the vision of the NBC Sports production and operations teams.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and manage a department of engineers and coordinators to meet the goals of the Remote Technical Operations and Engineering Department.
- Provide ownership over the NBC Sports owned remote equipment and systems. Ensure these systems continue to be maintained as well as oversee the design and build of new systems as needed.
- Advise on new system designs and provide ideas and concepts for new remote broadcast projects, with a heavy focus on remote @home productions.
- Manage the Monroe, CT based field shop, ensuring we have all the parts and equipment needed to run the remote engineering department.
- Stay current on relevant production technologies and make recommendations for workflow improvements.
- Oversee hypervisor systems to directly support remote broadcast operations.
- Collaborate with production and operations teams to implement technical solutions that align with production initiatives.
- Create clear, concise proposals and documentation for technical concepts and ideas.
- Maintain expertise in media systems, IP video and audio protocols, and codecs such as SMPTE ST-2110, JPEG XS, HEVC, SRT, NDI, Dante, AES67, etc.
- Stay current on emerging video technologies and share knowledge with RTOE and NBC Sports engineering team members.
- Travel as required for remote productions and technology support.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- 5+ years of recent experience in remote/mobile unit operations/engineering.
- 5+ years of total experience in a television broadcast environment or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
- College degree in engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of computer server installation and maintenance, including VMWare hypervisor solutions.
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows platforms.
- Proficiency in broadcast production systems and software, including Audio Consoles, Intercom Systems, Video Switchers, Wireless audio, server-based playout, and communications systems.
- Advanced understanding of TCP/IP networks and PC networking technologies.
- Proficiency in software-driven broadcast video equipment.
- Ability to read and understand system signal flow diagrams for television control room and studio facilities.
- Hands-on problem-solving skills with broadcast-related equipment and systems.
- Strong customer focus and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to travel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and diplomacy skills.
Desired Characteristics:
- Ability and willingness to learn and develop using cutting edge production technologies.
- Experience with Sony cameras and switchers, EVS Servers, Evertz Routing and Modular boards, RTS Intercom, Calrec Audio Consoles including the RP-1, ST-2110 standards-based routing environments, Evertz Magnum, EVS Cerebrum, and Tektronix test and measurement systems.
- System Design, AutoCad, and Project Management experience.
- Television production and workflow experience.
