Serious Eats is seeking a food-loving and detail-oriented Associate Food Editor to join our team of culinary enthusiasts, where rigorous research and hands-on cooking expertise combine to produce engaging, evidence-based content that inspires and educates home cooks. This role is ideal for someone who loves both working in the kitchen and translating that knowledge into compelling, practical content for home cooks. The Associate Food Editor’s primary focus is writing, editing, and building articles and recipes for Serious Eats, as well as working with the editorial team on other editorial tasks and operations. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, deeply curious, scientifically literate, approaches research rigorously and with skepticism, and can continuously generate new, fun, and exciting ideas across a range of content types and editorial initiatives. The candidate should have a strong vein of nerdy culinary knowledge and curiosity and strong cooking experience.
The position reports to the Senior Culinary Editor.
Hybrid 3x a week- New York
In-office Expectations: This position is hybrid in-office, with the ability to work remotely for up to 2 days per week.
Role Responsibilities:

Oversee recipe planning and production with our Birmingham test kitchen colleagues.

Pitch, report, write, and produce original content for the site, including short- and longform articles with a strong culinary focus (e.g., ingredient guides, culinary how-tos, and technique explainers), recipe headnotes, trend-driven pieces, and other story formats.

Work with new and established freelance contributors in all stages from onboarding and assigning to editing and publication.

Assist with taste tests, including research, shopping, and running taste tests.

Work with team on large editorial initiatives to help plan packages, digital issues, and editorial processes.

Assist with photo and video shoots and help produce social video content in conjunction with Social and Visual Editors, as needed.

Assist team with content library updates and production tasks on an ongoing basis.

Work closely with growth, newsletter, and social teams to develop and promote content.

Role Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

2+ years of professional experience in editorial writing, with a strong focus on food journalism or culinary content.

2+ years culinary experience, including culinary school, professional cooking, and/or recipe editing and writing.

A passion for food and cooking, with an interest and drive to understand why and how things work on a technical level.

Excellent research, writing, and editing (including copyediting) skills.

Ability to craft content that aligns with Serious Eats as a brand and resonates with our audience.

Commitment to thorough, rigorous fact-checking and evidence-based research on culinary, scientific, cultural, and historical topics.
