Going back to school can be a major financial risk for those who most need it. Since 2017, Leif has allowed thousands of students to use Income Share Agreements (ISAs) to make paying for education safer and easier. Unlike student loans, ISAs protect students by only requiring repayment once they get a sustainable job. COOP Careers ("ko-op") is a nonprofit "overcoming underemployment through digital skills and peer connections. We close the social capital gap by recruiting and investing deeply in diverse, low-income, and first-generation grads from the City University of New York, San Francisco State, and other urban public colleges. COOP’s flagship program is the Digital Apprenticeship. Peer cohorts of 16 motivated, underemployed grads meet nightly for 16 weeks (200 hours) to learn technical skills, build community, and jumpstart careers in digital marketing and data analytics. Each cohort is led by a team of four captains, “near-peer” COOP alumni who serve as coaches, mentors, and guides on top of busy day jobs at local ad agencies and tech companies. In parallel, COOP helps these same employers meet, interview, and hire more and more diverse candidates. Since 2014, COOP has run 75 cohorts with over 1,000 apprentices, on our way to 10,000 by 2025. Four-in-five alumni work full-time, earning an average of $45,000 after 12 months (3x pre-program average) and almost $70,000 after three years (2x peer baseline). Kinvolved's web-apps enable real-time communication among a young person's kinship network ΓÇô teachers, families, mentors, coaches ΓÇô to ensure s/he has aligned support to stay on track from preK-12th grade and beyond. Members of the kinship network can seamlessly communicate via two-way SMS/email/voice call in multiple languages, regardless of time or geographic location. Kinvolved is the ideal platform for working parents who want to be involved in their children's educations, but who lack time to be physically present. The company's first tool, the Attendance Tracker, allows teachers and after school leaders to record attendance and immediately notify kinship members of absence or lateness in multiple languages. Further product development, including a positive incentives tool, feature to predict and prevent student absence, and grade and behavior recorded, will enable communication about many additional data points, all to promote partnership and shared accountability for student success.
