Vector is a high-performance observability data pipeline that powers Datadog's On-Prem Observability Pipelines product and is the backbone of many companies' observability strategy, processing billions of logs, metrics, and traces per day. Vector has a suite of integrations that enable users to take in observability data from a wide range of available sources and to deliver that data, after transformation , to a variety of available destinations . This is core to Vector's value proposition of being a general purpose observability pipeline that integrates with all tools and vendors, allowing users to extract observability from all their systems and avoid vendor lock-in by easily routing data where it is most valuable.
We are looking for an open-source-minded engineer to bootstrap a new team focused on developing Vector and growing its community. You will play a key role in defining the roadmap of the Vector project, the structure of its team, the growth of the team, the governance of the project, and more.

  • Execute Vector's roadmap. For example, by building additional components like sources , transforms , sinks or making architectural changes to enable contributions or decrease maintenance burden
  • Help define the project governance and contribution guidelines
  • Assist with managing the Vector community including: reviewing external contributions, triaging bug reports, and answering questions on Discord and GitHub Discussions
  • Identify measures to gauge the health of the project and identify ways to improve it
  • Work with our Community Team to evangelize the Vector project

  • You love talking with users
  • You have at least 3-5 years of experience with systems-level programming
  • You have experience managing large open source projects with internal and external stakeholders
  • You are a proficient written communicator, with the ability to clearly articulate thoughts across a team
  • You ship fast, route around blockers, and cut through ambiguity
  • You have experience managing an OSS project with a community of users and/or contributors
  • You have a BS/MS/PhD in a Computer Science, Engineering or related scientific field or equivalent experience

  • You have experience with Rust
  • You've worked on extract-transform-load tools or stream processing systems
