The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is seeking a reporter to cover American consumers and the retail businesses that serve them.

You will jump on news and profile companies ranging from big box retailers and department stores to startups that aim to change the way people shop online. The beat is wide ranging, and may include coverage of unionization efforts among retail workers, shifts in consumption driven by the fast-changing economy, and the impact of tariffs and economy shifts on the industry.

You will be called on to partner with colleagues in the United States and abroad, who cover everything from labor to trade policy to Wall Street dealmaking to produce high-profile stories, scoops and investigations.

Preference in hiring will be given to candidates based in or willing to move to a location relevant to the story of retail in America today. Candidates should propose such locations in their applications.

Responsibilities:

  • You will cover breaking news and produce longer-form features.
  • You will collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom.
  • You will deliver clear and engaging reporting, adhering to The New York Times style guidelines and standards.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to a Corporate News Editor in New York.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience reporting on retailers and consumers or other core business beats with a demonstrated interest in retail.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop sources and break news.
  • Experience working in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms.
  • Strong reporting and writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong understanding of Times style and standards.
  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
