The New York Times Opinion department is hiring a researcher. You are an information omnivore and creative thinker who is passionate about Times Opinion’s journalism, gets excited about big ideas, has strong research abilities, and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. You will be intensely focused on researching and synthesizing findings in the form of memos.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform in-depth research for potential Opinion pieces, including reading books, articles and academic papers and conducting reporting calls with sources.
  • Write memos that synthesize key themes, arguments and questions around particular debates.
  • Research potential editorial ideas and participate in pitch meetings with writers and editors. 
  • Help move pieces through the production process
  • Coordinate with fact checkers.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Editorial Director, Opinion.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience in a research-focused role
  • Deep familiarity with The Times Opinion section.
  • Intellectual omnivore with deep knowledge of subjects the section covers, and curiosity to explore other topics.
  • Ability to sift through large troves of information and synthesize it clearly. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Open mindedness to arguments across the political spectrum.
  • Experience in a field like journalism, academia, politics, or think tank preferred. 
  • Expertise in one or more areas that are regular subjects of Times editorials, including politics, the law, technology, domestic policy and international affairs.
  • Collaborative spirit. 
  • Comfortable taking and giving feedback.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$97,310.59$98,000 USD
