Role
We are looking for a talented and passionate Product Design Lead to join Kaizen Labs. This is a hybrid role, and you will be expected to join our NYC team in-person for at least three days a week.
You will be responsible for creating exceptional user experiences and interfaces, helping us achieve our mission of empowering municipalities with beautiful, powerful digital experiences through technology. As the single designer in our team of 10, this is a role that allows you to touch every aspect of design at the company: from scoping and shipping products, conducting customer interviews, to creating design artifacts for marketing and sales. You’ll be actively shaping our design and product strategy with our Product Manager Lead and CEO . We’re looking for someone who is excited by this combination of hands-on design work, strategic thinking, and leadership.

Work closely with the engineering and product teams to create design solutions that meet user needs and business objectives.

Conduct user research and analysis to inform design decisions and identify opportunities for improvement in these areas.

Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs that effectively communicate design concepts and user flows.

Participate in user testing and feedback sessions to gather insights and iterate on designs.

Build and evolve our internal design system

Own iteration and fine-tuning of city-specific prototypes to prepare for client demonstrations. You will also attend many of these demonstrations.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent design implementation and brand adherence.

Stay up-to-date with design trends and industry best practices to drive innovation and excellence in design, specifically in the field of civic technology.

Actively seek out feedback from team members and stakeholders to ensure design solutions align with business goals and user needs.
You

You have 6+ years of experience in product design, preferably in a high-growth startup or tech company.

You’re a scrappy, self-directed builder that is comfortable shipping and maintaining products, moving fast, and reacting quickly to a rapidly changing environment.

You thrive in cross-collaboration with engineers, product managers, and customers. You understand that it takes a team to build great software and you have experience in iterating quickly and closely on design, product, and engineering decisions.

You’re incredibly proficient in Figma. Experience using common UI toolkit libraries like Material UI, Tailwind, BlueprintJS, and others.

You are detail-oriented and care about crafting high-polish experiences.

You care most about seeing your designs shipped and used by humans in the communities we serve.

You enjoy playing a client and brand-facing role.

You have experience conducting user research and analysis, and creating user personas and end-to-end user flows.

You have demonstrated experience in designing for inclusivity and accessibility.

You have strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment.
