Business Insider is looking for an editor to join the Life and Entertainment Freelance team and help brainstorm, edit, and package stories from our growing network of writers.

The lifestyle team works on hits such as peeks inside luxury hotels, essays about life-changing moves and travel mistakes, grocery-store diaries from writers around the globe, tips from flight attendants, epic food reviews, advice from home renovations, unique stories from people in unconventional living situations, and much more.

The team also produces longer lead stories that have awards potential, including a look into corporate men’s secret beauty secrets, a touching essay on traveling while gay, and a deep dive into how theme parks aren’t built for midsize and plus-size fans.

This editor will also be able to recruit new writers, brainstorm dynamic story framings, and determine what to cover next and how best to do so. Stories range from 600-word posts to listicles to essays and features.

The ideal candidate has excellent news judgment, superb editing skills, and an excitement for high-velocity, high-engagement storytelling. Each lifestyle freelance editor publishes about 30-40 stories a month.
This person will report to our deputy editor of lifestyle freelance, and work with BI’s in-house Lifestyle and Entertainment Freelance team to pitch, assign, commission, and edit stories from our growing network of freelancers and prepare them for publication. This position is union-eligible and based out of our NYC headquarters.

  • A keen eye for what’s trending and what’s about to be, coupled with good instincts about what BI readers find interesting
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading, fact-checking, and copyediting skills
  • Passion for the subjects that BI’s Life verticals cover (food, travel, fashion, design)
  • Experience packaging stories for publication, from nailing SEO to crafting headlines
  • Stellar organizational skills

  • Unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of parental leave
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Matched and vested 401k plan
  • Access to resources for financial planning guidance, family planning services, mental health reachout and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
