About the Role

The Jr. Legal Counsel will report to the Senior Director, Legal and will provide critical legal support across various areas including contracts, compliance, privacy, intellectual property, and employment law.

BrainPOP is a hybrid work environment, and this role will spend onsite time in our NYC office occasionally, or more often as needed. A candidate within a reasonable commuting distance to our NYC HQ is strongly preferred, but there may be flexibility for a remote hire in the Eastern time zone.

In This Role, You Will

  • Draft agreements and negotiate contracts for various business transactions, including school and district agreements, vendor  agreements, data privacy agreements,  RFPs, NDAs and more.
  • Assist the legal team in developing and executing compliance programs and associated internal trainings to ensure compliance with current company processes and procedures.
  • Assist the legal team in developing and executing programs to ensure compliance with COPPA, FERPA, and other privacy protection laws and education laws, updating the privacy policies and monitoring relevant laws and regulations.
  • Oversee registration of new IP, monitoring infringement of IP by third parties.
  • Assist with day to day legal team functions such as  vendor forms, COI requests, responding to data deletion requests, contract management etc.

  • An excellent verbal and written communicator; comfortable sharing knowledge and communicating legal policies, processes and procedures to a non-legal audience
  • Collaborative; able to partner effectively across teams and departments
  • Curious; stays attuned to changes in law

On Your Resume

  • J.D. degree required
  • Bar admission in good standing or pending admission in at least one US jurisdiction (NY preferred); without admission in New York, must be eligible to register as New York In-House Counsel
  • 1+ years of legal experience; in-house experience preferred
  • Experience with contracts; demonstrated negotiation, communication, and drafting skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Experience with IP and privacy a plus
  • CIPP a plus
  • NY Notary a plus

The BrainPOP team operates in a hybrid work environment: Each role has remote flexibility and an in-person component at our New York headquarters or other meeting locations.
