It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Join the 2025 New York Times fellowship as a video journalist to contribute cinematography and video editing of reporter videos in New York.

The Reporter Video team creates a range of news and other compelling stories for our website and social media platforms through videos that feature our world-class journalists on camera. You have expertise in video cinematography, lighting and camera work, both in studio and in the field, and experience editing short-form news or documentary videos.

Your portfolio and work samples should demonstrate a grasp of modern mobile-video storytelling, and it should show that you have creative ideas and the ability to work on small or large teams. You are ideas-oriented and have good production problem-solving skills. You also excel on deadlines and have experience juggling multiple projects.

This is a hybrid position that requires regular attendance in the office each week per departmental guidance. You may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with our video journalists, editors and reporters daily to set up, shoot and edit video stories in the field or in the studio

  • Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • No more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships
  • Video cinematography and editing and production experience for nonfiction storytelling
  • Visual-storytelling skills and a demonstrated understanding of camera and production equipment, as well as how to craft images to achieve a desired story
  • Can contribute images and editing to synthesize newsgathering and/or investigations into a tight, informative and engaging video
  • Experience creating original videos that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text
  • Video-editing skills with Adobe Premiere

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Canon video-camera systems
  • Experience working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience producing shoots and interviewing experts on camera
  • Experience making quick decisions under high-pressure deadlines in a news-production environment

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter. You should also include a link to a portfolio of your work. The application will prompt you when to upload materials and ask you for the link to your portfolio. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

You must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended with Optional Practical Training.

You may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a video journalist, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 2.
