As a Director, Software Engineering you will be responsible for leading a group of engineering managers and their respective engineering squads within the Identity Engineering organization.
You will be empowered to set technical and architectural direction, and to influence the roadmap for your group and the wider organization - working in partnership with your peers across Product, Project Management and Engineering. You will also be responsible for maintaining a delivery structure and organization structure to deliver against the Identity Engineering organization's roadmap most effectively.
You will lead and be part of an engaging, dynamic, and inclusive engineering organization, grounded in scrum and agile practices, with strong collaboration between squads, and motivated by a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. You will also help cultivate a culture that is focused on ensuring that guests, consumers, and internal stakeholders have a fantastic experience when interacting with our services and teams.
Identity Engineering delivers Consumer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) capabilities across The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) including but not limited to: D+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Parks. Identity Engineering squads build and run high-traffic and globally replicated systems which form an integral and visible part of every consumer's journey at Disney properties.
Responsibilities
- Set direction on the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of stateful microservices and lambdas in a multi-region cloud environment.
- Promote and support Agile methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban, and Scrumban by leading regular ceremonies such as stand-up, retrospectives and sprint planning.
- Mentor engineering managers within your group (and beyond!) to help them improve their technical ability and build their profile within and outside of the organization.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, QA, Operations, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and articulate technical decisions and outcomes.
- Partner with Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, and your leader to structure and grow your group within the Identity Engineering organization.
- Work together with Finance to provide financial forecasts, achieve financial budget commitments, and use data to prove the success of investments.
Required Skills
- Familiarity with at least one of the following Java Virtual Machine (JVM) languages: Java, Scala, or Kotlin.
- Familiarity with at least one of the following cloud providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Compute (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.
- Familiarity with the implementation of Identity-related standards, specifications, and security mechanisms such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and single-sign-on (SSO).
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with the Scala programming language and popular functional frameworks such as: Cats, Cats Effect, ZIO, and http4s.
- Familiarity with both object-oriented programming (OOP) and functional programming (FP) best practices.
- Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kubernetes, Terraform, and infrastructure as code (IaC) best practices.
- Experience with Agile at scale using one or more frameworks such as SAFE or LESS.
Required Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study
- 12 years equivalent work experience
The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $229,800.00 to $308,200.00 per year and in Seattle, WA is $229,800.00 to $308,200.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
