GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Director, Internal Communications will determine, coordinate and execute comprehensive Bancorp-level internal communications initiatives that support Fifth Third Bank’s strategic objectives. This includes specific oversight of internal communications for key corporate functions (Human Capital, IT, Risk, Finance, Operations and the Corporate Responsibility Office). The Director is both a team leader and a doer, capable of driving communications initiatives from conception to completion. This role reports to the Chief Communications Officer.

Responsible and accountable for risk by openly exchanging ideas and opinions, elevating concerns, and personally following policies and procedures as defined. Accountable for always doing the right thing for customers and colleagues and ensures that actions and behaviors drive a positive customer experience. While operating within the Bank's risk appetite, achieves results by consistently identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, and reporting risks of all types.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategic Communications: Develop, implement and program manage Bancorp-level internal communications strategies, messaging and collateral (written and visual) to support key business objectives, long-term goals, special projects and general company needs. 

  • Advisory Role: Advise leadership on strategy and direction, providing expert communications counsel and advice. Build credibility with cross-functional colleagues and the Communications team by demonstrating strong business acumen, effective communication, expert content creation and flawless execution.  

  • Lead and Do: Lead, manage and develop the Internal Communications team supporting Editorial/Brand Journalism, Human Capital, IT, Risk and the Corporate Responsibility Office. Efficiently balance strategy and execution, helping to prioritize projects and initiatives on behalf of the team. Lead the team and share in doing the work. 

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop communications campaigns and deliverables for multiple audiences using multiple channels. Ensure alignment in message, process and approach.  

  • Measurement and Analysis: Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of communication strategies and adjust as needed to achieve desired outcomes. Review and analyze metrics/data to discover trends and make informed recommendations. Continually integrate new technology tools and best practices to increase impact and efficiency. 

  • Write, Edit, Review: Write strategic communications material that connects to the Bank’s priorities and culture. Communicate clearly, consistently and accurately across a variety of channels. Have a passion for great writing and share that passion and expertise with the team. Elevate quality of others' writing to tell effective stories with edits that make copy tighter, stronger, more compelling.  

  • Crisis Communication: Develop and execute crisis communication plans to manage and mitigate potential issues if/as needed. Serve as Communications representative for business continuity workstreams, including natural disasters. 

  • Editorial Calendar Management: Develop a comprehensive editorial calendar for Bancorp-level communications to ensure smooth execution and integrated planning.  

  • Lean In, Ask & Improve: Ask questions. Identify areas for improvement and put a plan in motion. Seek fresh perspectives. Analyze best practices and implement changes to improve the employee experience. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for providing timely, candid and constructive performance feedback, developing employees to their fullest potential, providing opportunities for growth and development, and recognizing contributions and accomplishments.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelors’ degree required. Experience in banking and/or financial services strongly preferred.

  • 12+ years of experience with deep understanding of corporate communications and the highly developed inter-connectivity of internal organizational communications, executive communications, PR, events, thought leadership, and social media.

  • Excellent attention to detail, along with strong writing and editing skills for original content as well as rewriting and optimizing content.

  • Experience managing teams with differing priorities and motivating individual contributors to achieve shared goals. Experience translating business strategies into accountable priorities for the team.

  • Experience with a range of internal communications channels, including corporate intranet, email, video/webinar, in-office activations, etc.

  • Ability to deliver against tight deadlines when they arise, resolve issues, and propose solutions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Highly flexible; able to quickly respond to changing or unanticipated needs and mobilize cross-functional teams accordingly.

  • Strategic problem solver who can look around corners to identify potential obstacles and design thoughtful, creative solutions.

  • Intellectual ability and presence to earn the respect and attention of key internal partners, balanced with a sense of humor.
