The Role

Clear Street is building financial infrastructure for today’s institutions. Founded in 2018, Clear Street is an independent, non-bank prime broker replacing the legacy infrastructure used across capital markets. 

We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today’s complex, global market. Our platform is fully integrated with central clearing houses and exchanges to support billions in trading volume per day. Our Finance team is small but rapidly growing in a dynamic environment that offers the opportunity to learn about the business from the ground up. The team operates in a flat structure, allowing you to be a peer contributing to various aspects of accounting and reporting functions. Collaboration with different teams across the organization is integral to ensuring that finance and accounting functions are executed in a timely manner. As technology is driving our company's mission, the team will also leverage technology to automate accounting tasks and steer Clear Street and the finance team towards a more efficient future.

The Director of Financial Reporting will be responsible for managing all aspects of financial reporting, including the preparation of financial statements, compliance with accounting standards, and coordination with Finance personnel globally, other internal stakeholders and external auditors. This role requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in financial reporting, technical accounting expertise, and the ability to provide strategic insight to support Clear Street’s growth.

  • Financial Reporting Leadership: 
    • Lead and oversee the financial reporting function, ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and US broker dealer specific disclosure requirements.
    • Provide guidance on complex accounting issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.
    • Coordination with Finance personnel globally to ensure timely consolidation under GAAP.
  • Regulatory Compliance: 
    • Stay abreast of changes in accounting regulations and standards; ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
    • Help manage relationships with regulatory bodies and coordinate responses to inquiries related to financial reporting.
  • Accounting Policy:
    • Evaluate and document the accounting of complex transactions and accounting matters under GAAP in consultation with the standard, interpretive guidance and other sources.   
  • External Audit Coordination: 
    • Serve as the lead point of contact for external auditors; coordinate audit activities and address audit inquiries.
    • Work closely with external auditors to ensure a smooth and efficient audit process.
  • Process Optimization:
    • Evaluate and enhance financial reporting processes for effectiveness, efficiency and accuracy.
    • Implement best practices and stay informed about industry trends to continuously improve financial reporting capabilities.
  • Strategic Financial Analysis:
    • Provide financial insights to senior management and key stakeholders to support decision-making.
    • Contribute to strategic financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  • Talent Development:
    • Build and lead a high-performing financial reporting team.
    • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

  • Education: 
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. 
    • Master’s degree in Accounting is a plus.
  • Professional Certification:
    • Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation is required.
    • Other relevant certifications, such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), are a plus.
  • Experience:
    • At least 8 years of relevant experience in financial reporting, accounting, or a related field.
    • Progressive experience in roles of increasing responsibility within the finance and accounting function is preferred.
    • Ideal experience is an individual that started their career in a Big 4 public accounting within Audit, moved to Financial Advisory Services or joined a corporation to work in Finance/Accounting.  
  • Financial Reporting Expertise: 
    • Experience in preparing and overseeing the preparation of financial statements with comprehensive SEC disclosures in accordance with GAAP.
    • Experience with complex accounting issues, consolidations, and financial statement analysis.
  • Industry Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with the financial services or fintech industry, preferably with a focus on prime brokerage and market making.
  • Communication Skills: 
    • Excellent (verbal and written) communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex accounting concepts to non-financial stakeholders, as the role involves interacting with internal stakeholders, senior management, external auditors, and possibly regulatory authorities.
    • Along with being able to communicate clearly, to be successful an individual must be able to effectively listen to stakeholders and ask questions to understand their challenges.   
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Leadership and Management Skills:
    • Strong leadership skills with a track record of managing, developing and motivating teams.
    • Experience coordinating external audits and working with external auditors.
  • Software Proficiency:
    • Experience using ERP systems, with a preference for knowledge in NetSuite or Adaptive.
    • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software tools and technologies.
  • Attention to Detail: 
    • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate and reliable financial reporting.
    • Ability to review the work of others and identify inaccuracies as well as identify root cause.

The Base Salary Range for this role is $160,000 - $200,000. This range is representative of the starting base salaries for this role at Clear Street. Where a candidate falls in this range will be based on job related factors such as relevant experience, skills, and location. This range represents Base Salary only, which is just one element of Clear Street's total compensation. The range stated does not include other factors of total compensation such as bonuses or equity.
