About the Role

The New York Times is looking for a Director of Engineering in the Games Mission to lead the platform engineering behind the Games offered by The New York Times.

You will report to the Head of Engineering for the Games Mission, working with partners in Product, Production, Design, and Data to help our Engineering team develop mobile, web and backend platforms in order accelerate product development across all our Games.

Games are playing an important role towards our vision and we aim to be the premier subscription destination for digital puzzles. This is an important role to help build high quality platforms to bring consistency and technology excellence across all our Games.

We generally build APIs in Go on AWS, iOS apps in Swift, Android apps in Kotlin and web front-ends in React.


Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple teams of engineers to deliver the platform technical roadmap while assuring quality and reusability of engineering capability to build products
  • Create a line of sight to aims and goals of the Games mission, ensuring that staff understand their purpose and deliverables. 
  • Coordinate with other technology teams to create the right solutions, manage expectations, and keep strategies aligned
  • Coach and develop engineers and engineering managers
  • Create an inclusive team culture, recruit for, and retain extraordinary engineering talent
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Director of Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience managing managers
  • Experience running platforms at scale supporting consumer product development across web and mobile surfaces 
  • Strategic technical leadership experience and demonstrated understanding of how it connects to outcomes
  • Experience working in complex product organizations, supporting stakeholders with diverse and sometimes conflicting technical and product requirements
  • Expertise in creating healthy feedback environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of individual contributor experience either as a web or app developer   
  • Exposure to building and deploying high-traffic systems in cloud environments (preferably AWS)
  • Engineering experience in the gaming industry

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$196,000$205,000 USD
