I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.
The Associate Editor will be a hybrid writer and editor responsible for working closely with the Senior Editor and Senior News Editor to generate stories for the vertical for content across platforms. This will include a mix of writing, reporting and editing, as well as helping to lead digital coverage of key events, developing and implementing digital coverage strategy, and managing both routine daily news and breaking news situations. This candidate is a dynamic editor who knows how to find unique and compelling stories, a solid line editor and headline writer with sound news judgment and an ability to prioritize stories as they come in from all angles, working cleanly and quickly under tight deadlines. The candidate also needs to be able to ideate and identify key second-beat and breakout posts on breaking and trending news stories. It is key to have a fluent understanding of the digital landscape, including content streams, SEO and analytics, and to be meticulously organized. The associate editor may also be called upon to assist with breaking news and event coverage during nights and weekends.

40%. Finding, assigning and editing digital stories. Working with the legal team on story review.
30%. Strategizing and coordinating coverage, making assignments and overseeing execution, drawing on the editorial calendar as well as data and analytics. Assisting in developing sources and long-term reporting initiatives.
20% Writing and reporting
10% Preparing for news moments ahead of time, and other duties as assigned.

Education:
BA or BS, preferably in journalism or communications, related field or equivalent training and/or work experience.
Experience:
Minimum 4 years experience working in a high volume, digital news operation

A strategic thinker with a proven track record of creating content that increases traffic and engagement by using an analytics-driven approach.

Strong writing and editing skills, impeccable journalistic standards and attention to detail.

Ability to respond quickly to breaking news and juggle multiple projects and priorities.

Experience with SEO, content management systems and analytics.

An idea generator who can think of new, fresh ways to package content.

Excellent people skills and the ability to work with anybody: this role requires liaising with different departments.

Sound news judgment and knowledge of the PEOPLE brand.
