The Role

The App Experience team at The New York Times is looking for an Android Engineer. In this role, you will work with our Native squad to lay the foundations for satisfying native app experiences that give our readers access to our world class journalism in a medium that is responsive and personal. You will work with designers, other mobile engineers, and web engineers, and more on a cross-functional team with experience supporting remote work.

This is an opportunity to use a wide variety of tools, ranging from Kotlin and Jetpack Compose to hybrid web technologies - whatever will best solve the problem at hand. You’ll be part of an engineering organization that values transparency and openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City Headquarters. You will report to the Engineering Manager, App Platforms.

  • Create and maintain features using Kotlin
  • Contribute to app architectural decisions and timeline estimations
  • Participate in technical discussions with backend developers and other owners of internal/external dependencies
  • Where applicable, you will integrate with broader New York Times Kotlin platform code, which may be at least partially written or have dependencies written in Java

  • 2+ years of full-time experience as an Android Engineer
  • 2+ years of Android Kotlin experience, including writing unit tests, and UI
  • Experience working with Agile software development methodologies

  • Experience with coroutines and Jetpack Compose
  • Experience working with UI that adapts to different screen sizes
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs
  • Experience with Benchmarking

This role will require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
