New Visions for Public Schools’ Curriculum & Instruction department is seeking to hire part-time coaches to take on the role of Algebra 1 Implementation Coach, in support of New Visions’ role in the citywide roll-out of IM Algebra 1. Candidates for this role are experts in IM Implementation, have experience in NYC Public Schools, and have demonstrated expertise in working with teachers to shift instructional practice.

The Algebra 1 Implementation Coach role involves the following major bodies of work:

  • In collaboration with New Visions staff, teacher leaders, and external experts, refine an understanding of Illustrative Mathematics Algebra 1 curriculum;
  • Develop and implement professional learning opportunities -- including side-by-side coaching, mini-professional learning sessions, and data dives that support teachers in using IM Algebra 1;
  • Coach teachers and instructional leaders as a way to build school-based instructional capacity;
  • Work with district and citywide leaders in NYC Public Schools to support the successful roll-out of IM Algebra1.
  • Stay informed of shifts in the field (including NY State Standards, Regents, and national standards) and develop materials to inform instructional leaders and teachers about these shifts. 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with New Visions staff to utilize instructional materials that:
    • support student mastery through the incorporation of literacy routines;
    • embed scaffolds and differentiations to support all learners;
    • promote student success on the Regents exam (when applicable) and in future classes;
    • fosters the development of multiple literacies for application to college and career
  • Collaborate with New Visions staff to develop and implement teacher coaching grounded in curricular resources 
  • Study and facilitate curriculum implementation in school sites
  • Collaborate with New Visions staff to develop coaching plans that support both teachers and instructional leaders in developing school-based capacity
  • Contribute to the maintenance of curriculum websites, including the curriculum.newvisions.org microsite, as a component of the department strategy

Scheduled Activities:

Required:

  • Biweekly or weekly virtual, synchronous check-in with supervisor of this project, to ensure clarity, troubleshoot issues, and discuss job functions.

Recommended:

  • In-person attendance at coaching PLC and coaching meetings (both held on Thursday mornings) to ensure coherence with other coaches on this project. 

Optional:

  • Attendance at New Visions All-Staff meetings held during this part-time engagement
  • Attendance at New Visions staff social events is optional and on a voluntary (unpaid) basis

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Masters-level degree in education
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in public education, preferably urban schools and secondary level 
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising, coaching, or leading teachers, across at least 2 different school sites
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mathematics education, either as a teacher or a coach

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of systems-level change
  • Knowledge of professional learning and coaching to support IM Implementation (may be prior completion of IM Math Coaching workshop series or equivalent professional learning in Illustrative Mathematics)
  • Demonstrated ability to support teachers using curriculum materials with students with a variety of learning needs
  • Skills related to the design, implementation, and assessment of effective secondary curricula 
  • Strong service and support orientation towards schools and school communities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to navigate the diverse cultural environments of a wide range of public high schools, and ability to work effectively with a wide range of school and district leaders and staff
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Physical Requirements:

  • ability to travel onsite to NYC public schools across the 5 boroughs, multiple days per week, typically in 6 hour daily increments
  • walking up stairs
  • conversing with internal staff and external stakeholders
  • use of hands and fingers to operate a laptop, telephone, and/or keyboard
  • ability to carry up to 10 pounds (such as for a laptop and carrying case)

Job Status and Hours:

  • Weekly hours to generally range from 15-20 hours per week
  • Part-time, hourly position, not eligible for benefits, holiday pay, or Paid Time Off (PTO) beyond what is required under NYC law
  • Offers are contingent on receiving fingerprint background check clearance by the NYC Dept of Education and completion of New Visions HR onboarding

Pay Range:

  • School facing work (including team meetings after onboarding): $100 per hour minimum to $150 per hour maximum
  • Training and onboarding rate: 75% of  school facing work rate

While the majority of new hires’ starting salaries shall be expected to be placed in the first half of the range(s) to allow space to grow in the job, for those who already have significant relevant experience at that level of the job, placement at the higher end of the range(s) is possible.
