Calendar, Meet Future

The Story

Today,

launched Skimm Ahead, a new iPhone app that syncs with your mobile calendar to inform you of important upcoming world events.

Back Up

Three and a half years ago Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin quit their jobs as producers at NBC to create a simple newsletter geared toward millennial women. The newsletter, dubbed theSkimm, started as an email to family and friends and has since grown into one of the hottest media companies of the moment, boasting 3.5 million subscribers to date. BFD.

Since its beginning, theSkimm has primarily focused on summarizing yesterday’s and today’s news in its newsletter, Daily Skimm. The brief, snarky and wildly popular email service has edged its way into the morning routines of its many subscribers, which includes public figures such as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Arianna Huffington.

Now, the company wants to hone in on a different part of its audience’s daily routine.

So how does it work?

Aimed at the company’s existing demographic of digitally-minded women, Skimm Ahead provides curated events that include everything from the White House Correspondent’s Dinner to the premier of Game of Thrones’ sixth season.

The app costs $2.99 per month and you can also read theSkimm’s newsletter within the app.

While the Daily Skimm provides a debrief of past events, Skimm Ahead is a peek into what’s to come. In the same way email is an integral part of everyone’s life these days, a calendar is equally embedded into our daily rituals. This is the part of our routines that the company is trying to tap into, and ultimately make it easier for tech-savvy readers to stay informed through services they already check throughout the day.
