When businesses invest in employee development, everyone enjoys a payout.

Companies that offer career advancement opportunities, skills development, tuition assistance and other growth opportunities for employees are very attractive to jobseekers. In a recent poll by the Human Resource Standards Institute, HR leaders noted that opportunities for career growth are an important factor in influencing job acceptance, preceded only by compensation and flexible work arrangements.

Additionally, by supporting employee career development, businesses are likely to retain talented employees for longer periods. LinkedIn’s 2024 Workplace Learning Report noted that providing learning opportunities is the number one retention strategy for today’s businesses. In other words, fostering a culture of learning and career growth is a win-win for employers and employees alike.

For prospective job seekers looking for roles in the New York area, Built In NYC spoke with representatives from two currently hiring companies — Notion and Pinwheel — to learn about their team culture, potential growth opportunities and more.

Shriya Rathi
Commercial Sales Manager • Notion

Notion offers several productivity, organization and note-taking tools via its platform.

How would you describe Notion’s culture?

Our sales team is all about creativity and thinking outside the box. With a group of smart, diverse people and the rapid pace of AI and product changes, staying ahead means being inventive. We constantly try out new sales strategies to connect with our customers in fresh ways. A great example is our VIP dinners in New York City. These intimate events let us interact with clients in a more personal and engaging way, showing off our creative side and helping us build stronger relationships.

How long have you been with Notion, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been at Notion for a year and a half. I started as a sales team member and, through hard work, mentoring and solid performance, I moved up to lead our commercial sales team in New York. This growth shows how much opportunity there is here if you’re ready to hustle and bring your unique ideas to the table. Notion really supports your career development, and my experience here proves that if you’re dedicated and innovative, you can advance quickly.

Product Marketing Lead • Pinwheel

Pinwheel provides payroll API connectivity to help businesses streamline their finance processes.

Describe Pinwheel’s culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

“Collaborative.”

At Pinwheel, collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. A great example of this would be the cross-functional planning, development and execution that took place to get us ready for our upcoming product launch — details are still under wraps, but be sure to follow our LinkedIn if you’d like to stay in the loop!

This launch brought together diverse teams across sales, marketing, finance, data science, design, product and engineering. Each and every voice was not just heard, but genuinely valued for bringing their own unique perspective. Sales gathered critical market feedback which directly informed product development and go-to-market messaging. Design worked closely with engineering and data science to ensure the product’s features fulfilled users’ needs. Marketing partnered closely with product, finance and sales to ensure our launch clearly communicated the core value proposition.

Seamless cross-functional teamwork is a cornerstone of our success at Pinwheel, allowing us to prioritize and launch products that I believe are truly impactful and exciting.

How long have you been with Pinwheel, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I joined Pinwheel in January 2024, and I feel that the growth opportunities I’ve been given in such a short period have been remarkable.

“The growth opportunities I’ve been given in such a short period have been remarkable.”

Before Pinwheel, I worked at larger public companies, where roles and responsibilities were often siloed. At Pinwheel, the smaller team dynamic fosters a greater sense of collective ownership, giving me the chance to dive into a broader range of projects that I might not have had access to at a larger company. Instead of solely focusing on specific product marketing tasks, I’ve been able to explore other marketing functions — such as demand generation, sales and revenue operations.

This more comprehensive experience has taught me how the different functions within a marketing organization must work together to contribute to the success of the business, better positioning me to manage larger teams in the future. I’m so grateful to Pinwheel for this experience, and I look forward to continuing my growth moving forward.
