Finding a fulfilling career means more than just a well-paying job with good benefits.

Jobseekers increasingly seek roles that challenge and excite them and align with their values and aspirations. At the heart of this search lies a crucial element often overlooked in job descriptions and corporate websites.

Between August and October 2022, BCG and The Network conducted the world’s largest survey on job seekers’ recruitment preferences, with over 90,000 participants. When asked about their ideal career path, respondents cited work-life balance, leadership opportunities and the chance to work on exciting products, topics, or technologies as the top three priorities.

Meanwhile, according to a recent Tech Sentiment Report by Dice, nearly one-third of technology professionals are actively searching for new opportunities, and 60 percent are considering changing employers within the next year.

To attract potential employees, it’s not just about what a company does, but how they do it. The culture, team dynamics and overall spirit of a workplace play a crucial role in shaping an employee’s experience.

But how can job seekers gain genuine insights into these intangible aspects of a company? The answer lies in the voices of those who experience it firsthand.

Professionals from Capital One and Nourish offered a glimpse into working within their diverse company and team cultures.

Their perspectives shed light on the tasks and projects that fill their days and the underlying drive and team spirit that make each day unique.

Manager, Product Owner, Travel - Airport Lounges Digital Experiences • Capital One

Capital One is a bank holding company that aims to bring greater accessibility to the financial system. Founded more than 25 years ago, the company uses digital fluency to transform the customer experience.

Describe your company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

Capital One has a customer-focused culture. As a product manager for the airport lounges team, I’m focused on creating experiences that make travel easier for our customers. We recently created a mobile digital pass for customers to have a more seamless check-in at Capital One’s Lounges. We do a lot of research on our customers, so we know they were already using their phones to access their boarding passes, so we wanted to make it more efficient for them to have all their travel needs in one place.

I experienced so many opportunities, which is how I found a love of working in product management spaces that directly benefit our customers.”

How long have you been with the company, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I started as an intern with Capital One in 2017. After graduating college, I re-joined the company as a full-time associate through the Management Rotation Program, a two-year program where you work with two separate teams on delivering complex, cross-functional initiatives. During that time, I got to work on APIs, back-end databases, data analytics and Amazon Web Services. I experienced so many opportunities, which is how I found a love of working in product management spaces that directly benefit our customers.

Director of Business Operations • Nourish

Nourish offers clinical-grade nutrition care through a virtual network of dietitians, partnering with major health insurers to provide personalized coaching accessible to patients in all 50 states, often at no cost.

Describe your company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

Driven. Everyone at Nourish is incredibly mission-aligned and driven to accomplish our vision: to help one hundred million people live healthier, longer lives using Nourish. In practice, this means that everyone works hard towards a common goal. We have lofty goals, forcing us to be innovative in our strategy and work collaboratively to make the most impact possible. The entire team worked hard to scale our business to the almost 300 dietitians we have at Nourish now, which required dedicated time from our clinical, growth, operations, people and engineering teams.

What’s the coolest project you’ve worked on recently, and how did it help you grow professionally?

One project I helped launch this year was the coverage calculator on our website. As a healthcare company, it’s important to give our patients the best estimate possible for what our service may cost them. Building the calculator was a complex and interesting project, and required components of data analysis, product management, project management and design.

I was able to work cross-functionally with our engineering, growth and clinical teams, which always provides an opportunity for learning and growth — and is also just fun since I have some amazing coworkers and teammates. We’re huge on cross-functional communication and collaboration at Nourish, which makes us better as a team and makes coming to work a ton of fun.
