NYC tech startups raised $496M in January — here are the top 5 rounds

January was an average month for NYC tech, with local startups raising a total of $496 million in fundings. To compare, startups raked in a whopping $1.09 billion just the month prior — and nearly every industry was represented in the top rounds. This month is a little different, with smaller and fewer fundings, and a big emphasis on one industry in particular: fintech. Check out the top rounds.

5. AdvisorEngine, $22M, Jan. 2

Investor: WisdomTree

Bio: AdvisorEngine is a wealth management platform that financial investors use to deliver better outcomes for their clients.

News: The company received $22 million in debt financing from investments firm Wisdom Tree, a previous investor. The funds will be put toward the company’s acquisition of CRM technology Junxure, along with growing its user base.

4. Visible Alpha, $38M, Jan. 18

Investors: Wells Fargo & Company, Santander, Royal Bank of Canada, Macquarie Group, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Banco Santander, BNP Paribas

Bio: Visible Alpha’s software gives analysts more insight into investment intelligence and financial research.

News: The company raised $38 million in funding from a number of major banks, with Goldman Sachs leading the round. The money will be used to expand globally and meet the demand of its surge in customers.

3. Quartet, $40M, Jan. 3

Investors: Polaris Partners, Oak HC/FT, GV, F-Prime Capital Partners, Deerfield Capital Management

Bio: Quartet is a platform that connects patients and mental health providers.

News: The company raised $40 million in Series C funding, which will help it expand across the country and grow its tech team. To date, Quartet has raised a total of $87 million — it raised a $40 million Series B in April 2016, and a $7 million Series A the year prior.

2. MoneyLion, $42M, Jan. 4

Investors: Grupo SURA, Greenspring Associates, FinTech Collective, Edison Partners, DHVC

Bio: MoneyLion is a fintech platform that combines multiple financial services into one app so users can better manage their finances.

News: The platform raised $42 million in Series B funding to expand its capabilities. The round, led by existing investor Edison Partners, brings the total amount raised to $67.5 million. Investors explained that the platform’s middle class user base helps set them apart from the competition.

1. YieldStreet, $112.8M, Jan. 10

Investors: Saturn Ventures, Raine Ventures, Greycroft, FJ Labs, Expansion Venture Capital

Bio: YieldStreet is a platform that connects investors with alternative investment opportunities.

News: The company raised $112.8 million in Series A equity led by Greycroft and Raine Ventures. The money will be used to grow its platform and community. Launched in 2015, the company has raised $116.5 million to date.
