As crazy as it sounds, you can use Pokemon Go to market your local business, and it’s easier than you might think!

Handshakin is all about creating your brand. Promoting and marketing your brand gets even simpler once you get started.

Pokemon Go, created by John Hanke and his company Niantic, uses GPS technology (linked directly with Google Maps) to get players up and moving while on the search for Pokemon.

It uses “Pokestops” and “Gyms” to gather players together at various locations, and that’s just the beginning!

Here are some tips for using Pokemon Go, one of the highest downloaded gaming apps, to help you promote your local business.

  • Apply to be a Pokestop or a gym: it’s as easy as filling out this form. Players flock to these locations to gain items or battle each other, and Niantic is more than willing to consider adding new businesses to their growing list.
  • Offer special promotions: if you become a gym, offer some kind of discount to whatever team holds that gym at the time (or your own team if you choose to join). Find out if there are rare Pokemon near you, if so, offer special promotions to anyone who catches it while at your business.
  • Lure in customers: if you become a Pokestop, spend a little of your game coins to buy some lures. Dropping a lure at a Pokestop means Pokemon are more likely to appear there for the next 30 minutes! Players in your area will see this and come running.
  • Join the craze: download the app yourself! Knowing the game will give you talking points to use with all those players you just brought in! You can also screenshot Pokemon you catch with your business in the background to use as advertising. Plus: it’s just fun to play and can help you come up with even more marketing ideas!

Pokemon Go is changing technology yet again, make sure you and your business are on board!
