Cooks Venture raised $12 million — and designed its own chicken. This AgTech startup, founded by Blue Apron co-founder Matthew Wadiak, used selective breeding to create a chicken that can digest feed other than corn. Given that 25 percent of corn grown in the U.S. is used for chicken feed, and corn farming is a primary cause of topsoil erosion, the company’s approach could help abate global climate change by retaining carbon in the soil.
