We’ve been waiting a while for the “next big thing” in social media apps to join the ranks of Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

Last weekend, Peach launched in the iOS store, sending the media into a frenzy as to whether that very app had finally come to fruition.

Peach was created by Vine founder Dom Hofmann, and lets you create a multimedia Twitter-esque feed where you can post thoughts, drawings, photos, gifs and videos. There isn’t a character limit, but Peach posts tend to be short. Once you start to post, your stream begins to look something like this:

One of the coolest features of the app is its “magic words” function, which allows you to type a word in order to perform an action on the app. For example, if you type “draw,” a drawing board appears (similar to SnapChat’s drawing capabilities) to satisfy your inner artist.

Using the app, you can type “here” to drop a pin, share the weather in your location, tag your favorite TV show or book or identify songs.

Like most other social media apps, you have to “friend” your contacts to connect through the platform. Unlike other social media apps, there is no news feed and you cannot reshare your friends' posts within the app, but you can “poke” (so to speak) your friends by blowing them a kiss, putting a ring on them, hissing at them, etc.

You can share your own posts via text message, but the app doesn’t allow for sharing via email, Twitter or Facebook. The app reports when friends have posted something, but users must click into the friend’s stream to view his/her posts.

The app is simple and fun to use, and its whimsical features seem to echo a stream of consciousness. In that sense, the app works like a simplified and mobile-first blog platform, replacing long, thought-out posts with short, quippy messages. As writing down your thoughts and sharing them on the internet has always been in season, Peach may have just revolutionized the business.
